Description of business unit

The Group Culture and Internal Communications function has recently merged under one team and has an important role to play in helping Bank of Ireland realise its Purpose, 'Enabling our customers, colleagues and communities to thrive'. This team works hand in hand with the business to drive cultural transformation, embed its values and connect colleagues with the Banks Vision and Strategy. As a result, this division crosses over every part of the bank and adopt a partnership approach to working with key stakeholders.

Purpose of the Role

The Head of Internal Communications will work with the Head of Group Culture and Internal Communications, Group Executive Committee and Senior Leaders to champion cultural change by developing and executing a highly engaging and relevant internal communication strategy that robustly supports the embedding of the Group's Strategy, Purpose and Values. All forms of internal communications such as employee publications, events, multimedia communication campaigns and in-house training should articulate and underpin the desired cultural change.

Bank of Ireland is currently undergoing a cultural transformation and as communication is a primary driver of both cultural and behavioural change; this role will be at the heart of driving this transformation. A key focus for the successful candidate will be to align all internal communications across the Customer, Culture, Business, Technology and Risk agendas.

Key Accountabilities

Working with the Groups Director of Culture and Internal Communications and the broader team, in this role, you will:

  • Work with the Group Executive Committee, Senior Leaders in collaboration with other teams to develop and implement an enterprise-wide internal communications strategy that supports the organisations strategic priorities, purpose and values.
  • Conceive and execute internal communications campaigns, ensuring they are aligned with business objectives, consistent in messaging, highly creative and drive measurable results.
  • Advise the Group Executive Committee and Senior Leaders on the development of internal communications messages.
  • Be part of the organisations critical response team, providing advice on internal communications to the Group Executive Committee and Senior Leaders.
  • Manage and develop team members. Act as a manager and team player within the Group Culture and Internal Communications team across the island of Ireland, the UK, US and our broader European presence. Engage agencies and outside vendors as necessary.
  • Have exceptional experience in change and transformation communications. You will need to think creatively about developing engaging communication plans and programs that appeal to the whole organisation.
  • Be well-used to overseeing and quickly producing 'business as usual' announcements and drive the creative process and production of CEO communications content - speech, scripts, presentation, video etc working with graphics and videographer as appropriate.
  • Oversee and execute communications vehicles such as all-employee meetings and webcasts; senior leadership meetings; leadership announcements and challenge the approach.
  • Have responsibility for managing the groups Internal brand. Be the conduit between Marketing and the Group and act as a strategic IC partner to the Chief Marketing Officer.
  • Be responsible for advising and overseeing internal communications to keep the management team and employees informed on news and issues that affect culture and engagement of employees.
  • Work collaboratively with all divisions and corporate functions to ensure our culture and communications strategy is consistent throughout the group. Act as an advisor ensuring that central messages are cascaded throughout the organisation at various touchpoints.
  • Pitch in where appropriate to help teammates out on high-priority internal communications projects.
  • Build a strong internal network, demonstrate a good understanding of the business and have the ability to influence colleagues to bring your creative vision to life.
  • Support on the evolution of communication practices and establish a comprehensive framework and approach to employee communications.
  • Identify and advocate for the adoption of new tools and best practices.
  • Review and edit all written pieces, ensuring consistency in messaging and tone of voice
  • Define and analyse metrics, share insights, and adjust plans with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Manage a portfolio of internal communications plans, working collaboratively with programme staff to support and enable effective internal communications activities

What is the opportunity

If you're an experienced communications professional with 10 years plus working with senior leadership, who is passionate about delivering strategic, compelling, creative internal communications, then this job may be for you. You will be expected to lead, manage and create content for a diverse workforce and work as an advisor with Group Executive Committee and senior leaders in their presentation of information to employees. This role requires critical thinking, strategic and communication skills (both verbal and written) to work effectively within business parameters and with senior leaders, as well as to successfully motivate the broader employee base. This is a fast paced, highly collaborative role within a dynamic work environment.

Essential Qualifications

3rd level qualification and/or relevant professional qualifications

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrates track record of development collaborative relationships
  • Proven experience in a communications leadership role and ability to lead is a must

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • A track record of problem-solving key strategic business challenges in Financial or Professional service industry with breakthrough creative solutions
  • An innovative approach to developing and achieving key success metrics and demonstrated ability to influence successful outcomes
  • Worked in and exposed to senior level (C-suite) issues, projects and planning, highly confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent writing, oral and presentation skills
  • Team player, collaborative and positive attitude
  • Experience in managing teams of five plus
  • Experience in working in a purpose driven organisation demonstrating how you've brought to life for colleagues
  • Strong project management skills - attention to detail and implementation plans
