Description of business unit

The Independent Validation Unit ("IVU") is part of Model Risk Management and is the analytical centre of excellence within Group Risk for review and assessment of the Group's models. The IVU's responsibilities include:

  • Independent evaluation of models, both Retail and Non-retail for Credit IRB along with other models including IFRS9, ECAP, Decision Making, Market Risk, etc., within the Group.
  • Providing reports on each model, whether initial or periodic with an overall assessment of the model to the Risk Measurement Committee.
  • Ensuring models are fit for purpose or providing challenger analysis and recommendations for same.The Validation unit assesses all models used across the Group and offers the opportunity to obtain a wide variety of experience to different models supporting relevant processes including new business origination, pricing, capital, market/liquidity risk management.
  • The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for providing direction and managing a team of analysts in the oversight of validations, critical review and analysis of outputs, ensuring delivery of the validation schedule and ensuring delivery of high quality validation reports with relevant commercial insights.

Key Accountabilities

  • To manage and participate in the validation of models used across the Group.
  • Undertake and review statistical analysis and critical assessment of same. This includes managing and training other analysts on the allocated projects.
  • As part of the validation activities, ensure active and positive communication exists within the team and with the relevant stakeholders involved in the model validation process.
  • Responsible for delivery of final validation reports for all model validations to a standard appropriate for reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of validation processes and managing change/improvements within the Validation team.

They will be involved in leading validations, ensuring good teamwork, maintaining ongoing familiarity with validation processes and developments along with providing expert input and interpretation of regulatory requirements.

Essential Qualifications

Third level qualification in mathematics, statistics, science, economics or similar discipline involving significant numerical modules.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a quantitative discipline such as modelling and/or validation with an ability to work with large datasets.
  • Proficient in statistical analysis packages such as SAS.
  • Proven track record in understanding complex issues and delivering solutions
  • A team player with enthusiasm and energy, and ability to lead analysts in delivering under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and capacity to deliver an understanding of data issues to a non-technical audience
