Bank of Ireland Insurance Services (BIIS) currently distributes General Insurance products, including Home, Motor and Travel via the Branch Network, directly via the Call Centre and online. While maintaining recent growth trends, we aim to fundamentally change the way our business is distributed to favour Direct and particularly self-service channels to support this objective.

Purpose of the Role

Ensuring the delivery and adherence to the Group Risk strategy and the Central Bank requirements by providing oversight of all BiiS (BOI Insurance Services) Operational Risks, ensuring consistent governance and promotion of a culture of active risk awareness.

Key Accountabilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate risk management of operational risk across the business unit including setting risk appetite, monitoring and reporting of risk, providing subject matter expertise to key stakeholders. Responsibility for operational risk governance across BiiS involving close liaison with key stakeholders and cross functional teams.
  • Monitor any significant development relating to strategic projects having direct or indirect impact on customer experience or business critical processes (e.g. sales and distribution).
  • An ability to carry out risk assessments and monitoring of operating effectiveness of key controls for BiiS.
  • Managing dedicated tasks and supporting risk management and compliance for BiiS.
  • Monitor timely performance of required risk and internal control activities and provide timely reporting to the management team, as required.
  • Ensure appropriate mitigation of or remedial actions are designed and implemented, upon identification.
  • Support the business and functions with appropriate risk and compliance advice

Essential Qualifications

Relevant professional qualification and non-life insurance experience

  • Previous experience in the Risk function preferably operational risk, risk management, compliance or internal audit function.
  • Previous Risk, Regulation and Governance Oversight experience
  • Thorough business and industry knowledge;
  • Very good understanding of current and evolving regulation in non-life business.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Ability to handle complexity and distil out and explain key concepts
  • Proven ability to communicate the financial implications of risk-reward trade-offs;
  • Excellentunderstanding of financial services industry, key markets, participants, innovation drivers, and business issues
  • Able to work independently and make decisions autonomously, subject to subsequent review
  • Able to plan, organize workload, problem solve effectively along with theability to see the bigger picture, think creatively to provide alternative solutions, meet deadlines
  • Able to resolve conflicts, work with diverse cultures collaboratively, and manage key stakeholder sensitivities
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Proven high level ability to negotiate and influence
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive business relationships with all contacts inside and outside the Company
  • Ability to seek out and use all available sources of information to make informed decisions and to solve problems

  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of General Insurance business and in particular operational risk
