Description of business unit

New Ireland Assurance effectively completes the administration of all New Ireland Assurance and Bank of Ireland Life's Individual and Group business. Our focus is on delivering outstanding service, and ensuring that the highest quality and control standards are maintained at all times.

Purpose of the Role

The main purpose of this role is to certify the successful underwriting of applications within authority, in accordance with New Ireland philosophy and procedures.

The effective communication of underwriting decisions, and causes of action to key collaborators, adjudicating equitable resolutions in the most complex cases is a key area in this position.

There will be leadership on assigned projects and tasks, with representation of the team leader or Chief Underwriter in dealings with key stakeholders. An in- depth knowledge of underwriting and the wider environment, will help improve our proposition and service to customers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work to exceed quality, customer happiness, service, and efficiency goals.
  • Coordinate own queries, and offering assistance to the newer underwriters' when faced with sophisticated queries, cases and appeals. When issues occur, understanding the reasons why, and an ability to take timely action, to resolve and prevent reoccurrence is essential.
  • Demonstrate excellence in operational efficiencies, including quality, cost management, time to underwrite, speed of policy issue, and promote this demeanour within the team.
  • Proactively progressing own underwriting expertise. Participating in the skilful in-house training, and that by reinsurers. Analysing training needs for yourself and others, while suggesting, preparing and delivering formal training.
  • Support Junior and Intermediate Underwriters providing on the job feedback and mentoring.
  • May have ability to sign-off on non-claim and claim retro-underwriting decisions, referring to the Chief Underwriter for advice or support.
  • Key participation in projects or tasks such as; underwriting quality audits, underwriting efficiency audits, product development work, underwriting rules engine work, producing MI, detailing underwriting philosophy, documenting underwriting procedures, underwriting forms, Advance Underwriting Commitment reviews, and process changes.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • At least 8 years medical underwriting experience.
  • A consistent track record of excellent underwriting decision making, drawing on in-depth underwriting knowledge and taking commercial considerations into account.
  • Office limits for life and serious illness.
  • A detailed insight into underwriting principles and their application, with the ability to mentor others.
  • Ability to sustain relationships with customers (i.e. Brokers, FAs and I&I Managers) and colleagues.
  • A detailed understanding and ability to develop others knowledge of the company underwriting philosophy and guidelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and enthusiasm to prioritise tasks, demonstrating to others as an example.
  • Ability to demonstrate a key capacity in mentoring colleagues to help develop attention to detail and quality of administration.
  • Flexible in approach to working across all aspects of the department.
  • In-depth understanding of the Ireland life insurance market.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Relevant industry qualification would be an advantage
