The Credit Underwriting Unit is part of Retail Operations, and is responsible for the underwriting of credit applications that fall outside scoring for Consumer Lending, Credit Cards and Small Business & Agri. A key unit within the Group, the division partners with Business Banking, Consumer Banking and Distribution, while seeking to add quality assets to the Groups balance sheet while respecting capital.

Purpose of the Role:

The purpose of this role is to support the Banks key strategic priorities by leading a team of professionals to deliver timely, high quality lending decisions within the parameters of acceptable credit risk while ensuring appropriate balance between credit quality and policy.

This is an exciting opportunity where the successful candidate will gain valuable exposure to the Consumer and Small Business & Agri portfolios, while developing their people management and credit skills. Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead the SB&A Underwriting team to ensure all credit applications are assessed and decisions given within agreed SLAs, whilst adhering to Policies, Procedures & Regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to appeals and queries with empathy and professionalism and prudently exercise a lending discretion.
  • Engage with, and provide guidance to Underwriters and Branch/SME LA/Direct Lenders.
  • Support the Groups strategic growth objectives within the parameters of acceptable credit risk and ensure appropriate balance between credit quality and policy.
  • Collaborate effectively with key stakeholders, to identify and deliver continuous improvement in support of the Groups strategic objectives.
  • Review work practices within the team to improve the efficiency of the current processes while ensuring quality standards remain in line with best industry practice.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 passes (minimum Grade D) in Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate subjects, including Maths and English, or equivalent or superseding qualification.
  • QFA is also a requirement for the role.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in managing a team of specialists/professionals with an ability to work well under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
  • Proven credit assessment, and financial analysis skills, with the ability to identify key risks & issues.
  • Excellent analytical and decision making skills with a proven ability to exercise a high lending discretion and to package marginal proposals within acceptable risk parameters.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work well as part of a successful team.
  • Keen awareness of the importance of risk culture and knowledge of the regulatory and legal environment in which the Group operates.
  • Strong business and commercial acumen with high financial literacy and a knowledge of lending products and markets.
  • Energy and drive with the desire to achieve superior performance.
