What is the opportunity?

Bank of Ireland is embarking on a journey to transform how it develops software used to support its customers. We're looking for hands on, proactive Lead DevOps Engineers who are strategic problem solvers, but also more than capable to roll up their sleeves and implement key initiatives!

The Lead DevOps Engineer role is a senior role within the bank and you will need to be able to understand the sophisticated requirements of delivering software in a regulated environment, have a detailed understanding of the technical building blocks used to build / test / deploy our applications, and can communicate this to both a non-technical and technical audience.

In this Role, you will

Work with our Engineering Factories & DevOps Centre of Excellence to build best in class delivery pipelines, you will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with our engineering teams to understand their product requirements, how they build / test / deploy their software applications
  • Provide guidance on DevOps tools, environments & standard processes to our teams that have been developed by the DevOps Centre of Excellence (DCOE)

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in either a software development role where you have excellent exposure to releasing applications into a production environment or an operational facing role where you've had to deploy and support production type workloads.
  • You can articulate technical designs and processes to both engineering teams and non-technical audiences
  • Exposure to the requirements of delivering software in regulated environments, and comfortable with a large number of partners who need to understand how your processes are designed and delivered.
  • Experience using the Atlassian tool stack - Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket & Crucible

What will make you stand out?

If you've done software development, we would look for:

  • Excellent skills in one of the main scripting languages such as python, perl, ruby and their test frameworks. Strong development background in languages such as C, C#, Java, Golang and a thorough understanding of their test frameworks
  • Exposure to one or more cloud providers (AWS / Azure / GCP) and you're comfortable with how to provision infrastructure using the portal UI.
  • Excellent hands on experience in CI tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo etc.
  • You've used tools like Ansible / Puppet / Chef to deliver infrastructure, and you know how to test them thoroughly.
  • You've used Terraform to build cloud based environments, or private cloud services Docker and orchestration environments such as Kubernetes / OpenShift exposure.

If you've been more involved in the operational side of things, we like to see something like the following:

  • You have a thorough understanding of how the infrastructure is managed and provisioned in virtualized environments such as VMWare
  • You've used configuration management tools like Ansible / Puppet / Chef in anger and have a thorough understanding of their test frameworks
  • In depth experience of one or more of the cloud providers (AWS / Azure / GCP) and can automate infrastructure using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM Templates etc. Certifications are nice, but hands on experience preferable.
  • You've been on the receiving side of poorly specified and tested software, had to make last minutes fixes and swore this was never going to happen again. You are willing to use test first development to help overcome these last minute surprises.
  • You've configured and managed container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes, OpenShift and understand workload lifecycles in these environments
  • In depth experience of configuration management orchestration tools such as Ansible Tower / Chef Server
  • Thorough understanding of SSL & Cryptography and solutions for automation & management of SSL Certificates for applications

Essential Qualifications

BSc or MSc or equivalent experience in an Engineering based field.
