What is the opportunity?

Bank of Ireland is on a journey to transform how it leverages technology and develops software used to support its customers. Our Payments Team have a significant change agenda for the foreseeable future across its Payments Services that requires an experienced Java Lead to support our Java engineering capability.

This is a great opportunity to lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable microservices-based applications. You will mentor a team of engineers, collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, and drive best practices in software engineering.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java/JEE, Spring Boot, and Microservices architecture, with a strong understanding of Agile Scrum methodologies. Experience in the payments domain is a significant advantage!

In this Role, you will

  • Design and architect scalable, secure, and high-performance Java-based applications
  • Collaborate with business analysts, developers, and QA teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
  • Lead the design and review of system architecture, data models, and integration strategies across the team
  • Ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and technical documentation
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
  • Mentor junior developers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Complete and review BoI conceptual, logical and deployment technical design documentation and equivalent Kyndryl (IBM) documentation
  • Troubleshoot application issues and support with troubleshooting of infrastructure issues
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, scalability, and reliability to meet NFRs

What will make you stand out?

You have 7+ years of hands-on experience in Java/JEE development, , with at least 2 years in a technical leadership role. You are a strong expert in Spring Boot and Microservices architecture. You have proven experience working in Agile Scrum environments and with relational databases.

We are looking for someone who possesses excellent problem-solving skills, a proactive mindset with strong communication and leadership skills. You highly value teamwork and a collaborative approach and supporting/mentoring other members of the team.

Our IT Engineering & Delivery teams are responsible for designing, building, testing and delivering the technology that powers Bank of Ireland. Our teams, based out of Dublin, Ireland and Belfast, and Bristol, UK enable the bank's digital transformation by modernising platforms, improving system resilience and accelerating software delivery.

Our focus spans cloud adoption, DevSecOps, automation, cybersecurity and engineering standard processes - ensuring secure, scalable and high-performing solutions.

We are fully embracing new ways-of-working such as Scaled Agile and from core banking systems to innovative customer-facing applications, we deliver technology that drives efficiency, compliance and offers the best customer-experience.

This is a hybrid role, based primarily in Dublin. We typically ask colleagues to spend a minimum of 8 days per month working in-person to support collaboration and connection. Specific arrangements will be confirmed by your recruiter to ensure they meet the needs of the role and team.
